The common consensus is that if you do enough exercise you are going to lose belly fat. Many people spend hours working out in the hope that they will get a slimmer belly. In the end, when they don’t see any results, they simply give up. Is it time to challenge the notion that exercise may not necessarily help one lose weight?
This is not to say that exercise is bad for you; not at all. In fact, exercise is a necessary part of your life if you want to remain healthy. So why is it that exercise will, in many cases, not help with belly fat? To answer that question, you need to understand where belly fat comes from in the first place.
When you consume carbohydrates and sugar, they are broken down into fat and one of the first places that this fat is stored is around the belly. The rest is sent to your thighs, your hips, buttocks and other parts of the body. This means that if you want to lose weight you have to cut down on the amount of sugar and carbohydrates that you consume. Sounds easy, right?
The fight against sugar
The reason why so many people lose the fight against sugar is that they don’t know that it is present in almost everything they eat. In fact, there are unhealthy amounts of sugar in about 80% of all food that is found in supermarkets. That’s right – sugar is present in 8 out of 10 food items that you buy in the supermarket. It is in the last places that you look.
Manufacturers have dressed it up using different names so that consumers don’t know that they are consuming sugar. To add to the problem, there are no bodies or laws that regulate how much sugar manufacturers can out in a product. That leaves you – it is up to you to educate yourself on what contains sugar and what does not.
What most people fail to understand is just how addictive sugar really is. Every time you eat something that contains sugar your brain goes on a high. When the sugar levels in your bloodstream drop the brain goes on a low and you start craving some more. This means that you are constantly looking to get a sugar high just like a drug addict. In fact, many studies have shown that when mice are offered a choice between sugar and cocaine they choose cocaine every time. Yes, that’s how addictive sugar is.
So what should you do for a thin belly without exercise?
It is a matter of self-education. You must know what is in your diet and how much sugar it contains. Remember, we said that manufacturers are now using different names just so that consumers will not know that they are eating more sugar than is good for them. You must go back to eating a diet that is comprised of the basics. You should eat more good protein such as lean meat, fish, turkey and chicken.
There are many common healthy carbohydrates that you can choose from including potatoes (not fries!), sweet potatoes, pasta, whole grain bread and many more. Vegetables and fruits are a must – eat at least 3 servings a day. When you feel like snacking don’t reach for that protein bar – chances are that it contains sugar and since you a looking for a slimmer tummy it will not help you at all. Instead, snack on fruits and nuts – they are very healthy for you. Hydration is also important – you need to drink at least 2 liters of water every day.
There are certain foods that have been associated with quick belly fat loss. Chia seeds are a good example – they have very high levels of protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber. They can be added to almost anything because they don’t have a flavor. Eating a lot of dark, leafy greens will also help you burn belly fat faster. Lean meat is another one – the body requires more energy to break them down during digestion. If you are not a fan of cayenne pepper it is high time that you became one – when you eat cayenne pepper it increases blood flow to your intestines to speed up digestion.
In addition to fat burning foods, there are also beverages that you should be taking on a regular basis because they have been proven helpful with belly fat. Matcha green tea, ginger tea, fresh fruit juices and water are among them. It is important to mention here that you should be careful about the fruit juices. They contain sugar so you should be careful about how much sugar you are consuming. The best way to juice is always to mix fruit and vegetables in order to limit sugar content.
Is there anything else I should be doing?
We mentioned at the beginning that exercise is vital so make sure to make time for it. The other thing that you may not know about is adequate sleep. Many people don’t know that there is a direct link between sleep and belly fat. When you don’t get enough sleep not only are you physically tired, your brain also tires out.
Your nervous system functions at lower capacity than normal which means that your productivity is affected which leads to stress. Stress can easily make you eat the wrong foods. In fact, when most people are stressed they reach for comfort foods. Think about it, aren’t most comfort foods loaded with sugar?
You need to reorganize your life in such a way that you are able to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. True, life is full of hassles but if your health is important to you then you should find a way to make things work out.
As you can see, the battle for a slimmer tummy is not that hard. All you need to do is educate yourself on what contains sugar and what doesn’t.
