Dark circles around your eyes make you look tired and older than you actually are. There are plenty of home remedies will come in handy in helping you deal with the dark circles.

Cold compress

Dark circles can come about as a result of the blood vessels around your eyes dilating. To solve the problem, you need to find a solution that will reduce the size of the blood vessels. Cold compressing will help in this. Get a frozen ice pack, frozen water or frozen milk. Put it around your eyes, while lying down with your eyes closed.

The best option would be to soak a piece of cloth in chilled water and place the cloth over your closed eyes. When the cloth loses its coldness, soak it in the chilled water again and place it on your eyes. Repeat this every 10 to 15 minutes. Do this three to four times in a day.

Cucumber slices

Cucumber has antioxidants, vitamin K and vitamin C, which help to remove discoloration under the eyes. They also help to reduce inflammation around the eyes. Using chilled cucumber slices helps to ease the puffiness around your eyes by reducing fluid accumulation under the eyes.

To use the cucumbers, cut them into thin slices and then chill them in the fridge. Put a slice of cucumber on each eye while you are lying down with your eyes closed. When the cucumber loses its chilliness, take fresh chilled slices and put them over your eyes.

Another alternative is to squeeze out juice from a cucumber and use two cotton balls to apply the juice around your eyes.

Avocado

Avocado is rich in vitamin K, E and B2. These vitamins are essential in restoring moisture to dehydrated skin. Avocado also works by stimulating blood circulation around your eyes. This will reduce puffiness around your eyes and cause the dark circles to disappear.

You can use avocado in various ways. Cut them into thin slices and then apply a slice on each eye for 20 minutes. Another way to use avocado is to mash them and mix with almond oil. Apply this mixture to the affected area around your eyes and leave for 20 minutes before washing it off.

Tomato

Tomatoes bleach the skin, causing the dark circles under your eyes to lighten up. Mash a tomato and get juice out of it. Mix one tablespoon of this juice with half a tablespoon of juice squeezed from a lemon. Apply this mixture on the affected area. Leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse it out. Do this two times in a day for a couple of weeks.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice has bleaching properties and vitamin C, which bleach  the skin. Squeeze juice out of a lemon. Soak a piece of cotton cloth or cotton wool with the juice. Apply the juice around your eyes. Let the cloth sit on your eyes for 10 minutes and then rinse your eyes. Do this every day until you start seeing results. The lemon juice may cause a burning sensation, so be careful not to let it get into your eyes.

Rosewater

Rosewater works well if the dark circles are as a result of tiredness, overwork or working on the computer for many hours. Rosewater has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that helps fight allergens that may affect your eyes, such as dust. To use rosewater, soak a cotton cloth in rosewater. Lie down, close your eyes and then cover your eyes with the cotton balls for 20 minutes.

Tea bags

Tea has antioxidants and caffeine, which can help to remove dark circles around your eyes. They also help to reduce accumulation of fluids around your eyes. This reduces puffiness around your eyes. Chill tea bags in the refrigerator. Put the tea bags on your eyes for 20 minutes. Take away  the tea bags and clean your face. Do this once or twice a day for some weeks.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk has lactic acid and probiotics, which helps you to shed off dead skin cells and leave your skin glowing. The acid in the buttermilk also helps to reduce skin discoloration. To make buttermilk more effective, mix it up with turmeric. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties.

To use the buttermilk, mix two teaspoons of buttermilk with a quarter teaspoon of turmeric. Apply this paste on the affected area. Let it stay for 15 to 20 minutes then clean your face using warm water. Be careful not to stain your clothes with the turmeric.

Mint leave

Crush fresh mint leaves and add juice from half a lemon to the resulting paste. Apply the paste on the dark circles under your eyes and leave for 15 minutes. Wash your face using cold water. Do this twice a day.

Raw potatoes

Potatoes have bleaching properties, which will lighten the skin around your eyes. They are also rich in vitamin C, starch and other enzymes that help to nourish the skin. Chill a potato in the fridge. Take it out and slice it into round pieces. Place the pieces over your eyes, as you are lying down. Leave the potatoes for 15 minutes. The good thing about potatoes is that they will retain their chilliness for long.

Alternatively, grate the chilled potatoes and then squeeze out some juice. Dab two cotton balls into the juice and apply the juice around your eyes. You can also grind some cucumber and mix the resulting juice with the juice of the potato. Dab this juice on the affected areas around your eyes.

Pineapple turmeric juice

Pineapple has bromelian, enzyme, that acts as an anti-flammatory agent. It helps to reduce spotting on the skin, pigmentation and wrinkles. This leaves your skin glowing and looking young.

Turmeric has anti-bacterial properties that reduce inflammation on the skin. Mix two teaspoons of pineapple juice with two teaspoons of turmeric. Apply this on the dark circles under your eyes and leave for half an hour. Wash the paste off with warm water.

Sleep

Getting adequate sleep on a regular basis is vital. Seven to eight hours of a sleep in a day should be enough. If you have insomnia, visit a doctor to help you find a solution to your problem, so that you can be able to sleep comfortably. Also, make sure that you get enough rest every day.

Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins

Lack of adequate vitamins in the body can result in dark circles forming under your eyes. By making sure that you are eating plenty of vitamins, you can alleviate the problem. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits.
