SECRETARY REPORT

NORTH CAROLINA TRAPPERS ASSOCIATION

June 29, 2000

The Officers and Board of Directors of the North Carolina Trappers Association held the second quarter Board meeting on June 11, 2000 at the USDA/Wildlife Services Offices in Wake County near Raleigh, North Carolina. The group gathered for lunch at 12:00 noon and watched the NBC Dateline video of the coyote damage control trapper, ‘Quail on the Edge’ that is a video produced by NCSU, and the NCTA Introduction-modified NTA Education video. President Todd Menke called the Board Meeting to Order at 1:00p.m. EDST.

There were eighteen Officers and Directors in attendance plus visitor Paul Dobbins. Minutes of the March 12, 2000 Meeting were approved as distributed with the Meeting announcement. Treasurer Rose gave his report and announced that the NCTA now has 268 members and life members.

Perry Sumner, Director-at-Large and Furbearer Project Leader with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, provided a preliminary overview of the recently released raccoon trap testing report. Double or laminated jaws and bottom center swivels on foothold traps of #11 double longspring and # 1 ½ coilspring size appear to have received the best ratings. Perry will review the results and provide more detailed results at a later date.

Charlie Gray announced that the upcoming NTA Convention in York, Pennsylvania would be his last as the NTA Director for the NCTA. Charlie has decided to let the younger guys have it for a while. Tim Wilson will be attending all NTA Convention Meetings as an Alternate NTA Director with Charlie and will likely be named the new NTA Director once Charlie steps down officially. On behalf of the NCTA, THANK YOU CHARLIE GRAY !!! for all that you have done for NCTA, NTA, and individual members of both organizations.

Under old business, the Orange County Trap Ban Initiative has been squelched for the foreseeable future. The NCTA Web Site will be up and running by the end of June and can be accessed by: www.nctrapper.org –Thanks to Alex Davis. NCTA President Todd Menke and Wayne Rose teamed to produce a NCTA Introduction to the NTA Education Video. These are available on request from Todd or myself. David Woodward announced that the 4th North Carolina Trapper Education Program course offered on May 20th was again a great success thanks to members such as Claudie Taylor, Tim Wilson, Frank Newell, John Donaldson and Todd Menke. Todd allowed use of his Fur Shed, which is a real showplace. Paul Dobbins donated a copy of all the Dobbins Products videos (THANKS PAUL). President Todd Menke reported that the NTA BMP Meeting was a very worth while and informative meeting. North Carolina was well represented at the meeting. Treasurer Wayne Rose announced that NCTA would again have a booth at the Greensboro Sportsman Show on July 14-16, 2000 and help was needed to make the booth and raffle a great success. President Menke asked for and received support for utilization of NCTA Facts Sheet, NCTA New Release, and NCTA Handouts developed for quick response to anti-trapping initiatives. Officers and Board Members pre-paid for T-shirt orders so that more NCTA T-shirts could be ordered for the 2000 NCTA Rendezvous.

Under new business, the Board approved having a three-day 2000 NCTA Rendezvous at the NC Livestock Arena near Smithfield, North Carolina on September 22-24, 2000. The Trapper & Predator Caller Magazine sent NCTA a 25th Anniversary knife that will be auctioned at the 2000 NCTA Rendezvous(THANKS). Secretary Marks is compiling and distributing an e-mail address directory. If members want to be included please send an e-mail to the Web Page, or to drbdan@bellsouth.net, or to minkster@gloryroad.net. The Board, with deep regret, decided that a contribution to NTA could not be made until after the 2000 NCTA Rendezvous. The Board discussed the possibility of having a Southeastern Regional Rendezvous - any members out there that would like to work on this initiative?

Under other business, the Board discussed sponsoring and/or raffling special events throughout the year such as Fishing Trips, Rabbit Hunts, Swan Hunts, Deer Hunts, Goose Hunts, Nature Hikes, etc. If you have ideas and/or are willing to arrange a special event, contact Todd or myself.

Respectfully Submitted

B. Dan Marks, NCTA Secretary
